<image:caption>Untitled.(July 2020) My most recent edition to a body of work, heretofore unpublished but nearing completion, of the twisted nature of a particular forest, all done in black and white. These photos rely on shallow, but not too shallow, depth of field, and keeping most of the tones below middle, to convey the mood of the place.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Mr. Rainier from Old Snowy Mountain. (August 2020) About the time I intersected the PCT from the Snowgrass Flats trailhead I realized I forgot my sleeping pad. This probably occured to me about the time I notice it was already pretty cold and very, very windy. Crap. I decided to continue on and scramble up Old Snowy anyway, and then come all the way back out to the truck in the dark, about 17 miles round trip—not ideal, but better than freezing all night. Then I saw what the wind was doing to the clouds, the evening light starting to warm, and Mt. Rainier and an inversion layer and, well, up went the tent—sometimes you just have to suck it up. I shot this 10 feet from my tent—best single night in the backcountry I’ve ever had, hours and hours of changing clouds and light with Rainer and Adams visible from my campsite. 2020 wasn’t all bad.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Sunset over Mt. Ballard. (August 2020) On the first night of a through hike between Harts Pass and Rainy Pass in late August of 2020, this happened. 2020 was the best year I’ve ever had for cloud structures at magic hour, both in the mountains and on the coast, at sunrise and at sunset. I don’t know if that was luck or some kind of divine compensation for the shit-show that was 2020, but I’m thankful as hell. This sunset lasted for 45 minutes and the light in the other direction was just as amazing—I kept running back and forth across the ridge to shoot in both directions, laughing aloud at my good fortune, glad that nobody was watching. And a big thank you to my dad, who drove from Seattle to Rainy Pass to pick me up and drive me back to my truck parked at Harts Pass, and back home, at least 10 hours of driving!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Second Thoughts, May 2020. On May 30th 2020, a “once in a decade” storm coming up from Oregon was making for some serious news footage. Any other May, I would have just thought “cool” and got my work done, but it was the spring of 2020 and COVID had me stir-crazy and a bit bored. Why the hell not! I downloaded a radar app, watched a few youtube videos (thanks Nick Page), put a cooler and stove in the truck since everything was closed, and hit the road.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Earth, Water, and Fire. (August 2020) Probably the most spectacular scene I witnessed this year, after the apocalyptic storm mentioned above, was this sunrise in The Enchantments, just beyond Aasgard Pass. The sun is rising to the left of the frame and lighting up clouds forming in real time as they rise up from below the cliff at the end of the valley—those two plumes are sunlit clouds and they were boiling up as I watched! I’ve never seen anything quite like it. This image is particualry good large, so click on it!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Silver Linings, May 2020. Taken two weeks before the Apocalypse above, this image was the result of one of several “COVID drives” around the great state of Washington. The yellow fields contrasted with the stormy blue sky was subject enough, and I was already at work on my tripod when a half a dozen deer decided to meander through the scene! This frame, with the solitary deer hiding in the tall grass, fit the mood best.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Young Pine Martin. (August 2020) Pine Martens are rarely sighted in Washington—I saw not 1, but 2, both little guys, and who doesn’t like baby animals! The Martens played together, stopping periodically to stare are us (they were so curious!), and after way too many frames we finally headed off down the trail.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Mask of Gloom. (June 2020) I first discovered the way evening light revealed this forest fringe in layers on Christmas Eve of 2019, but either because the light wasn’t just right or I couldn’t put it all together, I didn’t get the photo in my mind’s eye. I drove by this scene many times on the way to another location, but it wasn’t until June of 2020 that I made it all work.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The Shadowy Seas. (Oregon 2020) This photo, taken at Bandon Beach in Oregon, includes the iconic “wizard’s hat” rock on the left, but what I love here is that the icon is rendered as one of several rocks that collectively make the photo what it is, and that the image isn’t about the rocks, it’s about the space between them, especially the space just out of sight—it is about a place you could go, a journey you could take, possibly a dangerous one, but one you nevertheless are tempted to make. That’s my take on it anyway.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A four minute exposure on the tail end of blue hour, shooting at ISO 200 and f16. I used much of my minimal equipment for this one—on the tripod, my 10-24 at 10mm (15mm equivalent in 35mm terms), shutter release, large microfiber cloth draped over the camera because it was raining, not to mention all the layers I was wearing. 90% of my landscape shots are taken with this lens.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A rare 13th Century manuscript containing the Icelandic Law Codes. Image taken without flash as the book is behind glass, handheld at 1/12s at f/3.6 with the 18-55 at 34mm (roughly 50mm full frame equivalent), ISO 1600. While not perfect, the IS rendered the book plenty sharp at 1/12s. When traveling, I take enough museum photos to want mid-range focal lengths with IS or fast apertures. Upgrading to an X-T4 with IBIS to use on a f/1.4 prime is tempting for museums, cathedrals, and the like.</image:caption>

<image:caption>One of many images I shot at 200mm (300mm equivalent in full frame terms). The 55-200 proved its worth over a more standard 80-200 f/2.8 or f/4 lens on a full-frame camera, not only for the extra reach, but the reduction in size and weight. Even at F4.8, the shutter speed was 1/1000s at ISO 400 for this shot. That being said, if Fuji made a 40-140 F4 that was internal focus and weighed in at no more than a pound I might go for it. Everything is a trade-off.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Of course, if you are headed to Iceland your kit needs to be solid for Aurora photography—I only got 3 clear nights in 12 and none coincided with highly active aurora, but this shot was on New Year’s Eve, certainly one of the best New Year’s nights I’ve experienced in 46 years, so this is an important shot to me regardless. Here I am on my tripod of course, fully extended as there was no wind for once, shooting on bulb with my remote cable release. The lens is my 18-55 wide open for the 2.8 aperture, which yielded 20 seconds at ISO 3200. I’ve since picked up a Samyang 12/F2 which would have dropped my ISO to 1600. Not sure if I’ll take it next time or what I would cut to make room for it.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Iceland tradition to build gigantic bonfires at various points around Reykjavik. Seems pretty Viking to me, and the flames look like the Lord of Light cometh, for those of you who appreciate the connection. Again, having that mid-range zoom (my 18-55) proved versatile when not working landscapes. This is wide open at 18mm and f/2.8. As always, Fuji noise is well controlled at ISO 1600, which for me means APS-C sensors are idea for carry-on only travel.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ll leave you with this, a shot out the airplane window on the way home. Having your camera in the personal bag under your seat allows for much better pictures out the window than does your phone. Are these going to make it into your portfolio? Probably not, but sometimes shots like these are great memories and I’d rather have the RAW file to work with.</image:caption>

<image:caption>11 am in Reykjavik and it’s just getting light on December 28th. Nothing special about this shot, but hopefully it gives a sense of what gear you might want in town. Taken at 50mm on the equivalent of a 28-85 zoom, a focal range that is hard to argue with for traveling. At ISO 400 and f/3.5 I was stopped down to 1/20s, far too slow to freeze action. A higher ISO or perhaps a wide prime to freeze motion would be good for something more than just a simple record shot. More about this idea in the image commentary below…</image:caption>

<image:caption>New Years Eve in Reykjavik was one of the best fireworks displays I’ve ever witnessed (the other being Tet in Hanoi). In terms of gear, I was wearing everything I brought—the land of Ice and Fire on a clear night is mostly ice, unless you happen to have fireworks. Obviously you need a tripod for night shots: this is a one second exposure at 55mm on the 18-55.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Could be Iceland. Or Scotland, judging by the architecture. Or anywhere north and bleak and old. Wherever it is, life is hard and harsh, and I can imagine being shuttered up in this building by a fire listening to the wind and waves and rain, long ago when it was no ruin at all. This is, indeed, Iceland.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Playing in the tide at Bandon, Oregon last November. Handheld with my hands just above the water and looking down into the flipped out Fuji XT-2 screen, I shot at 1/10th of a second and f16 , which gave me an ISO of 800, which on most cameras is indistinguishable from 400 or 200 or 160—the print looks fantasticly clean, no tripod needed.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ll leave you with a “cheap shot” at tripods—sometimes a tripod just might be dangerous! Here, I opted to stay loose and shoot handheld for obvoius reasons—railroad tracks don’t get shinny because tortoises polish them in the night.</image:caption>

<image:caption>What I love about this image is the sense of verticality and distance combined with expanse. Especially viewed large, I feel like the tree is right in my face but extends beyond my sight, where it gets wrapped into other trees, all continuing on and on and away from me, but that I am also wrapped up in them. It’s as if by touching this tree right in front of me, I am touching the whole forest. Taken handheld, with my hand and the lens hood on the tree, 15 mm full frame equivalent at f4.0. The only way a tripod and ballhead are getting this done would be to pound a piece of 1/4-20 threaded rod into the tree and screw the ballhead into it. Please don’t, especially into this tree.</image:caption>
